What does it mean to be a Freemason?
Being a member of our Masonic Lodge will introduce you to a wider range of friends and social activities, with the opportunity to help those in need in our community and beyond.

Integrity
Rather than working on buildings like the masons of old, today’s Freemasons focus on building themselves as people of integrity.

Friendship
One of the oldest social organisations in the world, Freemasonry is not defined by an ideology. It is open to people from all religions and political persuasions.

Service
Whether participating in events, fundraising for a charitable cause or volunteering for public or community organisations, service is at the very heart of Freemasonry.

Respect
With a membership of over 180,000 from communities across the country, Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race or religion.

What our members say
Freemasonry brings people together irrespective of their race, religion or background and gives our members enjoyment, friendship and purpose.
See what they’re saying below.
Joining the Masons has given me the chance to meet new friends and I particularly like the charitable aspects of freemasonry. We also have a vibrant and engaging social diary which is varied and rewarding. I thoroughly recommend joining Freemasonry and St Nicholas Lodge is a great place to start!

Bro James Hayward
I never really thought of joining Masonry until a few years ago, partly because I was working away so much and the many misconceptions held by those who believe it’s a ‘sinister’ organisation. Not true. It’s an ideal way to make friends and socialise in a more and more unsociable world and we come from many faiths and backgrounds.

Our ethos
Making Good Men Better
Freemasonry has been making good men better since the founding of the Grand Lodge of England on 27 December 1813, but the history of Freemasonry goes back much further than this

Joining St Nicholas Lodge was one of the best things I have ever done. It has given me structure and purpose and I wish I had joined many years earlier.

St Nicholas Lodge Bugle July 2025
Welcome to the July edition of the St Nicholas Lodge Bugle. It certainly has been a hot June and a challenge for our gardens and farmers. Delphinium (or Larkspur) and the Water Lily are the birth flowers of July. Delphiniums symbolise positivity, dignity and joy and the Water Lily signifies purity, transformation and resilience. If…

St Nicholas Lodge Bugle June 2025
