General Information
The St Nicholas Lodge No. 2586 was formed in 1895 and meets at Scarborough Masonic Hall, St. Nicholas Cliff in Scarborough Town Centre. The Lodge meets twelve times a year on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7pm.
Membership and Activity
Centred around camaraderie and shared values of integrity, friendship, respect and service we hold our monthly meetings in Scarborough on the first Wednesday of the month. The Lodge is opened and follows an historic structure involving all Lodge members working collectively and developing a sense of togetherness and purpose through our ceremonies (e.g. admitting new members or installing a new Master).
Our ceremonies are a form of story telling that are based around three principles, look after those less fortunate, improve yourself and live life well so as to be remembered for the right reasons. We all take part and the ceremonies have barely changed over the centuries, rooting us in the tradition of the medieval stonemasons whilst looking to the future. Above all we enjoy what we do and take pride in our roles.
Our lodge meetings provide the common foundation for friendships between members, many of which will last for life. Our dress is formal, black tie and white gloves, which adds to sense of respect we have in ourselves and in our lodge.
After which, the Lodge is closed and the brethren and guests retire for a meal and informal socialising.
St Nicholas Lodge is one of the most active Lodges in Scarborough with members from a variety of different backgrounds. Freemasonry brings people together, irrespective of race or religion. Our membership is diverse and includes a number of military veterans, current and former members of the policeforce, local government, medical profession, hospitality, and banking, with no restrictions on profession, trade or background of any member. St Nicholas Lodge consists of a varied age range, from 20 to 92 who all enjoy the fellowship membership offers.
To assist with the comfort and progress of newer members, a Lodge of Instruction is held on the Third Monday of each Month with a recess during the summer months. On these evenings, where attendance is optional, the newer members get to know the workings of the Lodge and the other members who attend.
Social Activities
The Lodge, also enjoys a comprehensive and active Social Calendar throughout the year with events which involve partners, family as well as embracing new or interested attendees.
These events include – An Annual Ball, Gourmet Dinner Evenings, Quizzes, Visits to Local Places of Interest, Ten Pin Bowling and the occasional Pub Crawl!!! These are open to all and attendance at any of these is an excellent and informal introduction to our Lodge and its members.
