The Lodge Banner

The Lodge ‘Banner’ shown at the top of our website, is designed to encompass two particular themes:

1. Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of Sailors

Being on the coast, Saint Nicholas was adopted by the Lodge. His story goes: he sailed through a storm on the sea which was calmed through his prayers, and so he became patron saint of sailors and his name is honoured in many places throughout Scarborough.

2. The Apprentice Pillar

The history surrounding the legend of this pillar is strongly connected with Masonic Folklore and is summarised as follows:

A pillar in the chapel at Rosslyn Castle, near Edinburgh, in connection with which there is an old legend. The legend is to the effect that an apprentice carved and completed the pillar in the absence of the master mason, and that on his discovery of the work, the master mason killed the apprentice by a blow to the forehead with a heavy maul.

Herbert F Inmam – Expert and Masonic Historian

Recently Rosslyn Chapel featured in the book by Dan Brown – The Da Vinci Code – which, further perpetuated the Masonic Connection to The Chapel and The Pillar. But St Nicholas Lodge got there first!!

To this day, St Nicholas Lodge has a strong connection with the Masonic Lodge in Rosslyn Village: Lodge St Clair No. 606, with regular social gatherings and visits to the Lodge and Chapel.
